This month at momstown Mississauga's Books for Babies program, our littlest hockey fans got to read My First Hockey Book by Ian Crysler.

March's Books for Babies

The book features simple text, and pictures of real kids playing hockey. Our babies loved the bright pictures and simple story. Early literacy is important did you know it's never too early to read to your baby? Some parents even start while the baby is still in the womb.

Our winning family this month was thrilled with the Scholastic Baby book of the month! 


We meet monthly for a fun story and circle time, read books, do fingerplays and get to know one another at our signature program Baby Basics! It's a great way to meet new friends and interact with other moms with young babies!

Making an Easter Ham? Easy Scallopped Potato Dish

 
Are you cooking an Easter Ham? Here's a simple recipe for scalloped potatoes that can make a whole new dinner the next day. Something the whole family is sure to gobble up!


Ingredients

  Ingredients:
 
5 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
 1 small finely sliced onion
Ham, up to 1 1/2cups sliced into pieces
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 3/4 cups chicken broth

2 tablespoons mayonnaise (light)

Dash of pepper

Paprika

 

Directions:

1. Spray or butter baking dish, in layers add potatoes, onion and ham.

2. In a medium pot over med-high heat, melt the butter; stir in flour until smooth. Gradually add broth, mayonnaise, salt and pepper; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thick and bubbly. Pour over potatoes. Sprinkle with paprika.

3. Cover and bake at 325 degrees for 2 hours or until tender

 
*optional to add up to ½ cup of Parmesan or Cheddar cheese over the top in the last ½ hr to brown and make a  cheesy crust.

Bookclub for Moms in Mississauga - Sponsored by Scholastic

March's momstown Mississauga bookclub event was sponsored by Scholastic Canada. We held it at a pub in Port Credit called the Crooked Cue this month, combining pub night and bookclub! What a fun mom's night out!

Scholastic Canada sponsors monthly bookclub events for our momstown kids and babies to support our literacy programs. This March, Scholastic also sponsored a Bookclub for Moms! We read The False Prince by Jennifer A. Neilsen.

Our Mississauga Moms were excited to take home a brand new hardcover - Thank You Scholastic for providing us with copies of the book! We shared them around and a few people bought the e-book since they prefer their e-readers. 

Everyone agreed they weren't sure what to expect from the book initally, and then couldn't put it down once they got into it! The False Prince is a great read - full of intrigue and suspense keeping you guessing until the end.

 

We meet for fun events like our bookclub, crafty moms nights out, boardgame nights, and coming this spring we'll be meeting at various fitness studios and clubs around the city to try out different exerciese classes!

Ballet with Barbie™ to Celebrate Barbie™ in the Pink Shoes DVD!

momstown Mississauga families and kids danced the afternoon away at Performers Dance Studio in South Mississauga on Sunday in celebration of the new Barbie™ in the Pink Shoes DVD. momstown held ballet themed events all across Canada this month with our little ballerinas and ballerinos!

Our Event agenda included two dance demonstrations, a crown craft for our princes and princesses, sparkly wand crafts, Barbie™ colouring sheets, playing with Barbie™ dolls in the dollhouse, and snacks - pink cupcakes & veggies!

momstown families were lucky to have the lovely Miss Jessica for a Ballet teacher from Performers Dance Studio running the dance demonstrations. This Ballerina had the 4 and 5 yr olds dancing and spinning around the studio to some of the same popular music that was featured in the Barbie™ in the Pink Shoes DVD.

The younger crowd (our 2 and 3yr olds) had their parents join in to dance and get silly having fun with their first experience in a dance class! Some of our moms were actually pretty talented!

The afternoon was capped off with a raffle draw – for our fabulous new Barbie™ in the Pink Shoes DVD! The lucky winners were thrilled with the prize.

 

We also had a generous donation of a fireman dress up set from our neighbourhood costume shop Fee Fi Fo Fun Costume Shoppe .

Books for Babies in Mississauga

Last month momstown Mississauga mamas gathered for a special Baby Book club at our Baby Basics group. Scholastic Canada provides the book for this monthly event for moms and babies aged 0-12months.

momstown Mississauga meets weekly at the Taima Zone in West Mississauga for our Baby basics group. Monthly we hold our Books for Babies event where we read stories mixed with rhymes, finger plays, sing some silly songs and of course it wouldn't be a great circle time without getting out the parachute! 

Reading aloud to your baby is a fantastic bonding time that stimulates your child at the same time. Benefits of reading to your baby:

• teach your baby about communication
• introduce ideas such as stories, numbers, letters, colors, and shapes in a fun way
• build listening, memory, and vocabulary skills
• bonding time for you and your baby
• help to build routines that provide your baby with security in their daily lives

momstown Mississauga's Baby Basics Toy Testing Experience sponsored by Fisher Price

momstown Mississauga moms gathered for an extra special Spring Baby Party as part of our Baby Basics program this week. Our moms and babies got to test toys (as well as a baby swing) from Fisher Price and at the end of the exciting morning we raffled the toys off!  That’s right 4 lucky moms got to take the toys home with them!

 Fisher Price knows the importance of Play! These toys provide children with Cognitive, Physical, Social and Emotional development opportunities through play. Events such as these showcase that momstown is different than a regular moms group! We offer so much more to our members! 

The event was generously hosted by the TaimaZone in West Mississauga. We meet there weekly with our babies, to discuss parenting, hear from local industry experts, make Baby Picassos art projects, our baby-storytime program and more!

The moms got up and moving too as we sang, signed and played with toys during this special bonding morning with our babies!
