Top Three Rainy Day Activities!

Spring is such a funny season, we had summer-like days in March with highs in the 20s, and now we are nearing the end of April with a high of 3 degrees in Mississauga.

My kids are very outdoorsy, so when the warm weather hits we practically live outside. On days when it’s cold and rainy and we can’t be out for long, it takes some creativity to keep everyone happy.

1. Sensory Fun
Our most favorite rainy day activity is playdough.  We love to make it ourselves whenever we can. The kids love choosing their own colours and the pride of ownership is terrific. (This also makes me happy as my pet peeve about playdough and three year olds is when they mix up all the colours into one big ball). That’s less likely to happen when they have chosen their own special colour!

2. Ready, Set, Go!
Another favourite rainy day pastime in our house is indoor races. We make up a relay race course in our upstairs hallway and take turns running, hopping, somersaulting and jumping from one end to the other. This is a great way to burn off energy. A word of caution though, you may want to consider removing the pictures from your walls if the kids are enthusiastic jumpers!

3. Fort Ryan
Once we have done our sensory play, and burned off snacks with our races, a great way to calm down and rest is inside a fort. I have a couple of big blankets set aside for this purpose and we have come up with some really great spots around the house to build based on the type of hideout the kids want to make.  The dining room table becomes a perfect cave with a blanket thrown on top. It’s a great place to get cozy and to read dinosaur stories! The living room is a favourite spot where our sectional can be turned into an elaborate multi-level castle fit for knights and princesses! Dress up is always a terrific addition to fort building and can extend the play to fill a long rainy afternoon.

One of the best things about momstown is all of the ideas available for crafts, outings, meals, organization and more! The amount of things you can find on momstown.ca is incredible. I plan to make momstown Mississauga a similarly great resource for our local Moms like you.
Looking forward to sharing this journey with you as we count down to opening day June 1st!

  2. Dress-up is a child's perfect thing for play...I save odd things like dad's ties & belts and mom's bags and beads. Thanks for the reminder.

  3. We are all about the Forts in our house!
When we have too many rainy days in a row, we go and walk in the rain... its what I did as a kid and I have such fond memories of it

  4. Serious indoor fun for a rainy day, of which there are many on the west coast! These would be our top 3 too, while others would be (in no particular order) hide and seek, baking something yummy, and painting. :)

  5. We tend to get crafty in the rain, and bake too. That being said, I have a vivid memory of my mom letting us put on swimsuits to go out in a downpour in the summer... I'd let the kids do that for sure when it's warm.

  9. Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add
to my blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.
I've been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.

  10. When I originally commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added"
checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get several
e-mails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that
    service? Thanks a lot!

  11. You actually make it seem so easy together with your presentation but I to find this
topic to be really one thing which I think I might never understand.
It kind of feels too complex and extremely large for me.
I'm having a look forward on your subsequent publish, I'll
attempt to get the dangle of it!
